‘Pele of Asia’ as cited by the great German coach Dettmar Cramer, fomer India International, Santosh Trophy winner, football great Pungam Kannan breathed his last yesterday evening at a hospital in Kolkata.
Kannan was not keeping well for more than a year and was struggling with several health issues. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
He moved to the top league by joining Mohun Bagan in 1966, where he played for seven seasons. Also, he ended up playing for East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting, the other two big teams from the city. After hanging boots up, Kannan settled down in Kolkata with his family.
Kannan had his association with Bangalore football through ADE in the 90s, where he was acting as guide to the football team.
